Skin on Frame Construction
Skin on frame consists of a skin stretched over a wood frame. This method could properly be categorized under the traditional boat building category in that it predates many traditional methods.
Today, contemporary technique use durable synthetic fabrics in place of canvas and animal hides. Weight in the mid 20 pound range is not uncommon.
I have yet to build and paddle on skin on frame canoe or kayak. My understanding that the modern skin materials are quite durable and forgiving of minor rubs and scrapes. Like any craft they will only accept just so much abuse.
